My Top 6 Tips for Creating Authentic and Impactful Themes
1. Engage in a friendly and conversational tone. Have a genuine (albeit one-sided) chat with your students during class, avoiding overly formal language that might hinder vulnerability and open connection. The only formality is that you have a plan.
2. Share why the message is personally important to you, revealing your own struggles or sources of inspiration. This allows students to get to know you on a deeper level. Even if you think they might not be interested, trust me, they are. Many students continue attending your classes because of your unique perspective as a teacher, not just the sequence. For example, you can admit that you don't always know how to feel peaceful (if that's the theme) but explain the ways in which you strive for it or emphasize that just like them, you also experience discomfort and uncertainty when trying new things.
3. Incorporate three theme sparks throughout the sequence. Here are two examples...
You could include a mantra, breathing technique, and sutra.
OR
A meditation, energetically aligned asanas, and facts about a chakra.
By including three elements, you ensure that the energy of the theme is tangible and can be woven seamlessly from start to finish.
4. Address barriers that may hinder the theme's progress, making it more relatable and specific. For example, if you're focusing on trust, explore what obstacles may arise, such as past betrayals, self-doubt, or gaslighting. Once you identify these barriers, you'll have various ways to address trust throughout the month without sounding repetitive. Whatever your theme may be, whether it's about intuition, letting go, grounding, or ahimsa, speak to what prevents it, distracts us from it, sparks conflict, and makes it difficult to achieve.
5. Encourage practitioners to set an intention for their practice and repeat it three times in their minds at the start of class. This helps solidify their approach to the class. At the end of class, right before coming up from savasana, prompt them to recall their intention and reflect on how they embodied it during the practice. It's okay if they forgot their intention, in which case, ask them to reflect on the energy they carried through their actions and whether it was nourishing or depleting physically, mentally, energetically, or spiritually.
6. Enhance understanding and connection by providing examples. For example, when discussing the theme and its impact, ask students to acknowledge the feelings that may arise and list a few feelings that may fit their current state, or when prompting them to set an intention, offer two or three examples of intentions that align with the core message.
Remember, these tips will help you create themes that are unique, captivating, and deeply resonate with your students.
